Dr. Mahetab H. Amer

Profile

Mahetab was awarded a BSc in Pharmacy and a MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Cairo University before completing her PhD in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Nottingham (2017). She then spent three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow as part of the EPSRC-funded 'Next Generation Biomaterials Discovery' programme grant, where she was involved in several multidisciplinary research projects spanning biomaterials research, cell biology, regenerative medicine, chemistry and additive manufacturing. Mahetab has received several awards for her research, including the Robert Brown Early Investigator Award by the Tissue and Cell Engineering Society in 2018. Mahetab joined the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Leeds as a University Academic Fellow in Predictive Disease Models in 2020.

Responsibilities

  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion representative

Research interests

Our research interests focus on exploring (stem) cell-material interactions, and how these can be exploited to recreate original functionality for disease modelling, artificial stem cell niche engineering and designing cell therapies.

Current research in my laboratory focuses on utilising multidisciplinary research concepts to develop in vitro models of healthy and diseased tissues, with a focus on recreating and studying the matrix-mediated mechanisms underlying disorders of the bone, bone marrow, and mesenchymal stem cell-associated diseases. We employ tissue engineering approaches for the development of these in vitro models, with the potential for future translation for use in personalised medicine and high-throughput drug screening platforms.
