Dr Matthew Watson

Profile

I completed my Msci in Chemistry with a year in Europe at the University of Glasgow in 2010 before moving to the university of Edinburgh to undertake my PhD and postdoctoral work with Professor Scott L. Cockroft working on single-molecule electrical interrogation of man-made transmembrane molecular machines.

I joined the University of Leeds in 2017 to examine the bacterial protein-secretion machinery SecYEG using single-molecule fluorescence (FRET) approaches.

Responsibilities

  • point of contact for the smflab @ The Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology

Research interests

I am now a post doctoral fellow in the Radford Group, I serve as the first point of contact for the single-molecule fluorescence lab (smfLab) @ the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology. I have benefited from working with researchers from other disciplines (electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, biochemistry) within FBS on a number of projects employing smFRET to look at the dynamic behaviour of membrane and periplasmic proteins involved in outer membrane protein biogenesis. Many new projects in different systems (inner membrane protein biogenesis, amyloid), are underway at early stages of development. I am currently funded to remain here for the next three years and am writing grant applications to extend the scope of the smflab to deliver new research. I currently collaborate closely with partners in Bristol UK and Budweis Czechia. I am always keen to discuss potential ways in which the smflab could add value and mechanistic insight to your research.
