Phoebe Dartnell
- Course: BSc Sports Science and Physiology
Why did you choose to study your course?
I chose the course based off its incorporation of physiology with sport and exercise. I had done lots of research into the varying benefits and uses of sport and exercise when writing my EPQ so was very intrigued and excited to learn more.
What do you enjoy about your course?
I enjoy being able to carry out and observe lab experiments this year and getting a more direct experience. I have really enjoyed all of the anatomy, physiology and biochemistry aspects of the course.
What were the highlights of the course?
Changing back to a mix of in person teaching really improved my experience of the course. I have also been enjoying running a large experiment measuring changes in flexibility by creating two different stretching routines.
What has been the greatest challenges throughout your course?
Starting the course in 2020 was particularly challenging as everything was online and I found it difficult to motivate myself. This year I have faced problems in my personal life so managing with Uni work has been hard, but I am proud of myself for achieving a place to study in Mexico next year, as well as my published report and good results in my exams.
What is your research project on and what has it involved?
My research project focuses on how Lockdown has impacted wellbeing and access to exercise for Healthwatch Westussex. It involved running multiple surveys, analysing the results, vast amounts of research and improving my critical writing skills.
The report I created was published by healthcare organisation Healthwatch West Sussex: How has Lockdown impacted on wellbeing and access to exercise | Healthwatch Westsussex in addition to being sumnitted to numerous related organisations.
I also peronsally partcipated in the National Social Prescribing conference to discuss my report, and I plan on repeating the project next year with an eye to expand its reach beyond West Sussex.
Why did you choose the University of Leeds?
I chose Leeds due to its course material and the lab opportunities, and although my experience has been altered due to COVID-19 restrictions, I have really enjoyed my time on the course so far. I also love the city and have felt at home there since coming to my open day in 2019.
How has your course helped with your career aspirations?
The course has opened me up to many options I hadn’t considered before starting at Leeds.
