Leeds academic awarded Senior Fellowship by Wellcome Trust

Dr Elton Zeqiraj has been awarded a Senior Fellowship by the Wellcome Trust, the UK’s leading medical research charity.

Dr Zeqiraj is a Wellcome Trust and Royal Society Sir Henry Dale Fellow in the University of Leeds’ Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology.

I’m absolutely thirlled to get the opportunity to deliver this programme in the Astbury Centre.

DR ELTON ZEQIRAJ, SCHOOL OF MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR BIOLOGY

This Senior Fellowship entitled “Regulation of immune signalling via ubiquitin-mediated receptor degradation”, will provide £2m over 5 years to support Dr Zeqiraj and his team, allowing them to focus on unravelling the strcture-function relationship of ubiquitin processing enzymes in immune signalling regulation, and to develop tools to induce immune receptor degradation in cells.

Dr Zeqiraj said: “We have a unique opportunity to study how elevated and persistent inflammation is regulated, and how this can be suppressed, and I’m absolutely thrilled to get the opportunity to deliver this programme in the Astbury Centre. I am also very thankful for my team who have made this possible.”

Ubiquitin Signalling Team

The Ubiquitin Signalling Team at the University of Leeds is led by Dr Zeqiraj. They study how Ubiquitin governs cell signalling networks. They’re interested in Ubiquitin Structural Biology with their main focus being deubiquitinating enzymes. The majority of their efforts are dedicated towards understanding how deubiquitinating enzymes are activated allosterically, and how they can be inhibited when it is beneficial to do so.

Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust is a charitable foundation. Their aim is to improve health for everyone by funding research, leading policy and adovcacy campaigns, and building global partnerships.

They work with people and organisations using science to solve health challenges. They fund discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, and they support research to find solutions to three health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate change.
