Dr Dane Vishnubala MBBS MSc (Med Ed) FRCGP MSc (SEM) DipSEM (UK) FFSEM SFHEA PhD

Dane is a Consultant Physician in Sport and Exercise Medicine who has over 20 years experience in the physical activity and long terms conditions space as well as holding several senior roles with Public health England, Office Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and the Royal College of GPs (RCGP). He has an MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine, an MSc in Medical Education and a PhD in Medical Sciences. Dane co wrote and developed our MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine and our PG Cert in MSK Medicine which he continues to develop and teach on as the academic clinical lead. Outside of Dane’s University of Leeds work, he is a a Consultant Physician (specialist)  in Sport and Exercise Medicine for the MOD in Catterick. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer at Basketball England/GB Basketball, Volleyball England and the Rugby Football League. Privately he works at Yorkshire Sports Medicine Clinic in York.

Dane has worked as the team physician for a number of professional and international teams including:

Dane is currently the Chief Medical Officer for GB/BE Basketball, Volleyball England and Rugby Football League (RFL). He currents chairs the Clinical Governance Group for UK Athletics.

Physical Activity

He has a strong interest in physical activity and preventative health with 20 years’ experience in the health and fitness industry as an exercise professional and as the founder of CORE Fitness Education, a fitness education training provider. He is the lead doctor for the Sport England funded National Physical Activity Health Care Professionals Education programme. He was a member of the UK Chief Medical Officers Physical Activity Expert Communications Group and has worked for Public Health England and OHID in physical activity roles. His extensive physical activity work has led him to receiving the BASEM David Hemery Outstanding Contribution to lifestyle medicine award for 2023.

Education

Dane is passionate about medical education and teaches regularly in physical activity, MSK and sports medicine. He is the current Chair of Education at the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine and is Clinical Lead of the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Leeds. Dane has been teaching in higher education for over 14 years now. He has a number of research outputs with the main areas of interest being SEM medical education and concussion. He is currently the training programme director (TPD) for Sport and Exercise Medicine Specialist Training for Yorkshire and Humber and the curriculum co-lead to the Sport and Exercise Medicine Specialist Advisory Committee. He has an academic role with Imperial College London as an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Public Health and with the University of Derby as a Visiting Professor in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Dane has co edited the textbook: Sport and Exercise Medicine, The Essential Guide, published by Routledge which has been translated into Chinese and Russian as well and co written a chapter for the textbook Brukner and Khan’s Clinical Sports Medicine.

Student education

Dane currently actively teaches and leads the academic clinical components on the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine, PG Cert in Musculoskeletal Medicine. He supervises MSc in SEM research projects and delivers a range of CPD to current and alumni of our SEM courses.
