Research interests

I am a Lecturer and Independent Investigator in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leeds. My research group comprises of a multidisciplinary team of exercise physiologists, respiratory physicians, healthcare practitioners and behaviour change scientists, who collaborate to improve the lives of people in whom respiratory limitation and exercise intolerance is a major symptom. The specific aims of my lab are two-fold; firstly, to optimise the diagnosis and management of exertional breathing disorders in both athletic and patient cohorts (areas of interest include exercise-induced asthma, laryngeal dysfunction, breathing pattern disorder and cough), and secondly, to evaluate the therapeutic utility of exercise training and physical activity promotion in people living with chronic lung disease. In collaboration with colleagues based in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, a key focus of the lab is to understand the mechanisms of exercise limitation and skeletal muscle wasting and influence of physical activity, nutritional and pharmacological interventions in a range of respiratory conditions including severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and primary ciliary dyskinesia.
