Dr Ciara Baines

Profile

I joined the University of Leeds as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in 2023 for a project exploring the tropicalisation of reefs in Japan. I completed my PhD at the University of Tartu, Estonia in June 2023. My research explored the effect of pollution on cancer in aquatic species. I researched differences in genetic cancer defences across fish species and undertook a fieldstudy exploring whether two flatfish species could adapt to polluted environments using cancer as a biomarker. I completed an MSc at the University of Essex in Tropical Marine Biology in 2019 and a BSc at the University of Hull in Environmental Science in 2016.

Research interests

I am a quantitative marine ecologist with a specific interest in the effects of anthropogenic change (climate change, pollution) on aquatic systems and species.
