David Starns

Profile

I am currently Lecturer in Bacterial Genomics within the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Prior to this position I worked in the genome annotation and curation team for the Vector, Eukaryotic Pathogen and Fungi Database Informatic Resource (VEuPathDB) for over seven years, improving and integrating data sets and delivering high quality training. Focusing on key species within Kinetoplastid and Fungal domains, but stretching across all organisms covered by VEuPathDB.

Prior to this I completed my PhD on wood-eating termite gut microbiota, focusing on spirochetes, and their physiological function within the gut. The project was a collaboration between the University of Liverpool and and the Japanese Collection of Microorganisms, one of the bioresource centres within RIKEN, Japan.

Research interests

My research interests span both prokaryote and eukaryote genomics, microbial ecology and the evolution of micobial lifestyles (symbiotic, parasitic etc) as well as the arthropod vectors that transmit and harbour these.
