Facilities experts to showcase cutting-edge technology

The Faculty of Biological Sciences is opening its doors to give university staff a unique glimpse into how research facilities at University of Leeds enable world-class research.

The event, which takes place on Thursday 21st November, starting on level 11, Astbury building, will give attendees the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of each facility and hear from people who have used this cutting-edge equipment to make bold and exciting discoveries.

Starting at 9:30 AM, attendees can enjoy coffee and pastries while registering for a full day of presentations, tours, and networking.

Experts from each facility will then present short overviews, showcasing the capabilities of facilities such as Bioimaging and Flow Cytometry, Electron Microscopy, and Mass Spectrometry.

Guests will also learn about the facilities through guided tours, where they’ll experience the labs and equipment in person and learn how to book the facilities.

These labs and facilities are vital spaces where exciting, new knowledge is discovered for the very first time, and they’re right here in the heart of campus. We’re excited to welcome staff across the university to showcase our technology and have conversations about how we can support them to deliver their research.

Dr. Ruth Hughes, Bioimaging Support Scientist, Faculty of Biological Sciences

The day also includes user talks from researchers who have used the facilities to drive impactful projects, such as PhD researcher Maddie Gilbert, who was part of an international research team which used imaging technology at Leeds to see into an Alzheimer‘s disease brain, and Dr Emily Byrd, finalist of the Mike McPherson Innovator award.

There will also be a session covering facility updates, such as work to further embed sustainability practices into facility management, led by Charlotte Hawksworth, sustainability architect for Research Facilities.

Our research facilities teams undertake amazing work to make state of the art equipment and techniques available to our university community. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet with the teams and find out about the exciting work which is currently taking place.

Vicky Mays, Operations Director, Faculty of Biological Sciences

To round off the event, attendees can participate in a fun scavenger hunt, with winners announced during the closing remarks at 3:00 PM.

This event is open to anyone at the University of Leeds.
