Professor Dave Lewis appointed Vice-President of the British Pharmacological Society

The Leeds academic will begin the prestigious leadership role in January 2025.

As Vice-President (Academic Development), Professor Lewis will be responsible for leading the educational activities of the Society, supporting the education, training, and continuing professional development of pharmacologists and pharmacology educators, and raising the profile of pharmacology as a discipline.

He will also Chair the Education and Training Committee.

It’s a unique opportunity to work with the Society and its members to support pharmacology students, educators and researchers in the UK and beyond in their professional development, and in realising their personal career goals and ambitions.

An education focused academic, his activities include creating a range of opportunities for student personal and professional development, non-traditional capstone projects and education in research animal sciences.

Passionate about working with international partners, he delivers professional education courses for all those involved in the care and use of research animals in India, China and across Africa.

He has also led on international educational initiatives, such as co-founding, with African partners, the Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE) whose aim is to support African researchers to undertake high-quality humane science by providing professional education opportunities and facilitating the development of animal ethics committees.

In the last five years, over 3600 people from 28 African countries accessed these opportunities and they’ve since used this knowledge to establish and strengthen their own institutional and regional hubs of knowledge and competence across the continent.

Professor Lewis is also a multi award winner, having won an AdvanceHE National Teaching Fellowship, the (UK) Physiological Society Otto Hutter Physiology Teaching Prize and the British Pharmacological Society’s Zaimis Prize for Sustained Achievement & Leadership in Pharmacology Education.

His work on global challenges has forged productive links between the University of Leeds and numerous partners around the world. He is a true innovator in education and its important contributions and links to research. Rarely have I met somebody as enthusiastic as Dave and I am sure he will do a fantastic job in this prestigious post at the British Pharmacology Society.”
