MSc by research

This 12 month programme features no taught content, rather you will undertake a research project and write a thesis from your results. Similar to a PhD, you will have a supervisor who is based in your chosen field.

MSc by Research will develop your academic and practical skills and is an excellent option should you wish to explore your area of interest further but feel that a PhD is not the right choice at this time. MSc by Research students often go on to PhD study or to work in industry.

Fees and funding

Standard postgraduate research fees apply. In addition, some projects require a bench fee. 

UK candidates can apply for a Postgraduate Loan to fund their studies. University of Leeds graduates may be eligible for the Alumni Bursary.

Making your application

The first stage is to contact possible supervisors.  Most members of staff are able to offer a 12 month project, although it may not be advertised on their website. It is possible to start an MSc by Research any month of the year.
