A stepping stone for a PhD
The integrated Masters program set me up perfectly to pursue a PhD; my supervisor and personal tutor assisted with my application, gave me great advice and provided thoughtful references.
Teaching others
I have just been accepted on a PGCE course! The Gryphons into Schools programme offered by Leeds Sport allowed me to gain valuable experience in a secondary PE environment.
Hands-on training
Instead of just learning things at a superficial level, pursuing a BSc in Medical Sciences gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into the various aspect of each discipline in relation to the human body which comprises cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
Award-winning student research
Through my research being acknowledged in such a way, I have been inspired to pursue a career in marine ecology and conservation that not only helps the environment, but also those that rely on it.
Launching a career in STEM
My placement year has given me the relevant skills to succeed in a career in STEM. In addition, my network in STEM would not be what it was without a placement year, with lots of opportunities open to me thanks to my placement.
Gaining industry skills
My placement gave me good background of the clinical pharmaceutical setting which is useful knowledge to have, whether I choose to stay in clinical or not in the future.
Successful PhD application
I have developed a keen interest in virus-host cell interactions. My summer internship and final-year research project helped me to realise that I want to pursue a research-based career in this area. I am very excited to continue researching bunyaviruses during my PhD at the University of Cambridge.
Experience studying abroad
When I came back to Leeds I'd say I was much more confident. I think just general development as a person from life experience is the main thing. Personally my study abroad opportunity helped me develop as a person and opened me up to going abroad for a Masters degree.
Fighting against malaria in Africa
Lily Adams, Ambika Barakina and Olivia Tipping have graduated from the School of Biomedical Sciences this summer. As part of their studies, they collaborated with students in Nigeria to co-create evidence-driven, sustainable solutions to the challenge of malaria in Africa.
