MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine is designed to offer medical doctors, physiotherapists and sports therapists a unique and practitioner-led education in the field of sport and exercise medicine (SEM). Our professional students apply from a wide range of professions including junior doctors, sports therapist and physiotherapists.

The career prospects for our graduates include working within NHS musculoskeletal and private sports medicine clinics, as well as sports clubs. SEM is now a recognised training route by the GMC for clinicians.

Sarah Hattee

Sarah completed the MSc part-time over two years while working for Yorkshire Carnegie academy as a physiotherapist. During her time on the MSc, Sarah has moved to the Lead Academy Physiotherapist position and has now also secured the role at the GB Basketball Women's U20 physiotherapist.

Linda was an F2 when she started the MSc. Since completing the MSc she has secured team doctor work with Basketball England and York Knights, who she completed a placement with. She is now completing her GP training in Leeds.

  • After completing medical school, Michael came back to the University of Leeds to undertake the MSc full time, whilst working in an A&E training job. Michael achieved the highest score in his cohort on the SEM course and has since secured roles with Leeds Rhinos and York City Knights RL. He has recently passed his final A&E exams and has a year left to go to gain consultancy.

Gemma PhillipsGemma’s work in rugby league has been recognised by the RFL and is now currently one of the leading doctors in the RFL contributing to the government work on getting the sport restarted post COVID-19.
